Leaves changing color
Leaves changing color
It is so much fun to be a part of children's natural curiosity! Students were asking about the First Day of Fall picture on the calendar and why the leaf was orange. This led to one of the easiest and quickest ways to explain why leaves change color. The Black Marker Experiment with coffee filters. Then it led to how the leaves change color so we did the experiment with leaves and rubbing alcohol. What fun it is to see their expressions when all the colors came out of the black markers and yellow came out of the green leaves on the Maple Norway. They are eager to see what the yellow birch, red oak and sugar maples will do when they return tomorrow.  They also had a good time saying Chromatography!
Chromatography is the  process of separating mixtures into their individual parts. In this case the mixtures were pigments in the leaves and pigments in the markers.
Wonder what we will do next????
